The Agsafe Industry Standards are Australia's national benchmark for the safe handling, storage and transport of agricultural and veterinary (AgVet) chemicals. They provide a practical framework that helps businesses manage risk, meet regulatory obligations and demonstrate responsible chemical management.
When a site becomes Agsafe Certified, it has been independently assessed and demonstrated that it meets the requirements of the Agsafe Industry Standards. Certification demonstrates more than compliance — it shows commitment to safety, responsibility and continuous improvement.
The Agsafe Industry Standards framework
The Agsafe Industry Standards are structured across seven core areas of operational compliance and safety. Together, these Standards provide a comprehensive framework for managing safety, compliance and operational risk across the AgVet chemical supply chain.
The Seven Standards
Standard 1: Chemical Compliance, Documentation, Placards and Signage
Ensures accurate chemical records, required documentation, compliant signage and licensing arrangements are in place to support safe and lawful operations.
Standard 2: Storage and Segregation of Hazardous Chemicals
Sets requirements for the safe storage, segregation and containment of hazardous chemicals to protect people, property and the environment.
Standard 3: Ignition Source Control and Fire Protection Systems
Addresses ignition source control and fire protection measures to reduce the risk and impact of fire incidents.
Standard 4: Site Safety, Maintenance and Equipment Integrity
Focuses on maintaining safe site conditions through effective maintenance, equipment integrity and operational controls.
Standard 5: Workplace Health, Safety and Training Systems
Requires structured safety systems and appropriate staff training to support safe and compliant workplace practices.
Standard 6: Transport and Sales Compliance
Ensures transport and sales activities are conducted responsibly and in accordance with regulatory and industry requirements.
Standard 7: Emergency Preparedness and Response
Requires documented emergency planning, equipment and training to ensure sites can respond effectively to incidents.

How Certification works
The process is structured, supportive and transparent.
Step 1: Register
Confirm your site details and scope of operations.
Step 2: Prepare
Complete a self-assessment and gather supporting documentation. Agsafe provides guidance and resources to assist.
Step 3: Assessment
An independent assessor visits your site to review documentation, inspect facilities and discuss processes with staff.
Step 4: Corrective actions (if required)
Where improvement opportunities are identified, businesses are given the opportunity to address corrective actions before certification is finalised.
Step 5: Certification
Once requirements are met, certification is granted for a three-year period. Sites are expected to maintain standards throughout the certification cycle, not just at assessment time.
Agsafe works constructively with members to support ongoing compliance and improvement.
What you receive when Certified
Upon successful certification, your business will receive an Agsafe Industry Standards Certificate for display at your premises, together with a suite of approved digital certification assets for use across your website, email signatures and social media channels.

Maintaining Certification
Certification remains valid while your business continues to operate in accordance with the Agsafe Industry Standards. Agsafe supports certified businesses through an ongoing assessment cycle focused on continuous improvement, helping businesses maintain compliance and continually strengthen their operational practices.
Where certification lapses, certificates and approved digital certification assets must be removed until certification is reinstated.
