bagMUSTER expands into Tasmania, marking first new state rollout

Agsafe is pleased to announce that bagMUSTER has expanded into Tasmania, marking the program’s first rollout into a new state since its establishment.

Agsafe CEO Alicia Garden said the expansion represents an important milestone for the program and the broader industry.

“This expansion into Tasmania represents a significant step forward for bagMUSTER and for the industry as a whole,” Ms Garden said.

“Our focus is on building a truly national program, and we are committed to expanding access so growers right across Australia can benefit from a consistent, practical solution for managing agricultural plastics.”

Collection sites are beginning to open across Tasmania, with more scheduled over the coming months. All sites are co-located with existing drumMUSTER collection points, providing added convenience for producers who can return bags and drums in a single visit. Tasmanian growers and agribusinesses can find up-to-date collection site locations via the bagMUSTER website, along with details of participating retailers supporting the program.

bagMUSTER is an industry-led, not-for-profit product stewardship initiative, spearheaded by CropLife Australia and the Australian Seed Federation and operated by Agsafe, providing growers with a responsible and accessible pathway to dispose of eligible agricultural plastic bags. The program collects empty woven polypropylene (PP) bags commonly used for products such as fertiliser, seed, grain treatments and stockfeed. These bags, once properly emptied and prepared, can be returned through designated collection sites, where they are aggregated and sent for recycling.

The program is funded and supported by participating manufacturers and retailers, allowing growers to return eligible bags at no cost. This industry-led approach helps ensure agricultural packaging is managed sustainably at end-of-life.

The expansion into Tasmania is significant for the state’s agricultural sector. Agricultural plastic waste can be difficult to manage in regional and rural areas, often leaving producers with limited disposal options. By establishing a structured recovery and recycling pathway, bagMUSTER reduces the volume of plastic entering landfill or being stockpiled on farms, supports improved environmental outcomes, and strengthens Tasmania’s circular economy.

Importantly, bagMUSTER also supports on-farm sustainability goals and provides a practical solution aligned with increasing community and regulatory expectations around waste stewardship. By participating, growers can demonstrate proactive environmental management while contributing to a nationally coordinated recycling effort.

Tasmanian producers are encouraged to check the bagMUSTER website for eligible product details, preparation requirements, and their nearest collection site. With collection sites already open and more to follow, the program is set to deliver long-term environmental and operational benefits for the state’s farming community.
