Agsafe launches new Industry Standards for the AgVet chemical industry
The new Agsafe Industry Standards officially came into effect on 1 July 2026, providing Australia's agricultural and veterinary (AgVet) chemical industry with a modern framework for safe, compliant and responsible chemical operations.
The Standards represent the next evolution of Agsafe's long-standing commitment to improving safety, stewardship and industry best practice. Developed in collaboration with industry and refined through a successful pilot program, they have been designed to help businesses confidently manage their regulatory obligations while strengthening day-to-day operations.
Businesses involved in the storage, handling and transport of AgVet chemicals operate within an increasingly complex environment. Regulatory requirements continue to evolve across work health and safety, dangerous goods, environmental protection and transport, while customers, suppliers and the broader community expect businesses to demonstrate responsible chemical management and sound product stewardship.
The Agsafe Industry Standards respond to these challenges by bringing industry expectations together into one practical, nationally recognised framework. Rather than simply outlining regulatory obligations, the Standards translate them into clear, practical requirements that businesses can apply within their own operations.
Structured across seven core Standards, the framework covers chemical compliance, hazardous chemical storage, fire protection, site safety, workplace health and safety, transport compliance and emergency preparedness. Together, these areas provide a comprehensive approach to managing operational risk while supporting safer workplaces and responsible chemical stewardship.
Agsafe Chief Executive Officer Alicia Garden said the launch reflects the industry's commitment to continually improving safety and raising standards across the AgVet chemical supply chain.
"The Agsafe Industry Standards provide businesses with practical guidance that supports safe operations and responsible chemical management," Ms Garden said.
"They have been developed with industry, for industry, recognising the real challenges businesses face while providing a consistent framework that can be applied across a wide range of operating environments."
"Certification under the Agsafe Industry Standards demonstrates a commitment to nationally recognised industry requirements and gives customers, suppliers, regulators and local communities confidence that certified businesses are operating responsibly."
Certification is supported by a structured assessment process, practical guidance materials and ongoing monitoring to encourage continuous improvement throughout the certification cycle. Businesses are assessed against the requirements of the seven Standards using an evidence-based approach that considers both documented systems and site practices.
Agsafe thanks the many industry participants, technical experts and stakeholders who contributed to the development of the Standards. Their knowledge and practical experience have helped create a framework that is both robust and achievable for businesses across the AgVet chemical supply chain.
